On Wednesday, June 29, Chris Hedges (Pulitzer Prize winner and former foreign correspondent) will speak at United Presbyterian Church in Schoharie, NY on "Death of the Liberal Class." The talk will be taken from his book of the same title. This talk is sponsored by the group Peacemakers of Schoharie County.
Mr. Hedges, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, has been a reporter from more than 50 countries. He received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism. He has taught at Columbia University and Princeton University.
As a liberal Christian, Hedges has written that:
...democratic and Christian (values) are being dismantled, often by stealth, by a radical Christian movement know as dominionism, which seeks to cloak itself in the mantle of the Christian faith and American patriotism...
He has also been a sharp critic of traditional liberalism:
(The liberal class's) ideological stance is determined by what is most expedient.... It refuses to challenge, in a meaningful way, the decaying structures of democracy, of the ascendancy of the corporate state.
The Schoharie United Presbyterian Church is located on Main Street, Schoharie. Pastor Emeritus Bob Smith, a current parishioner at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Albany, secured this venue for Chris Hodges' presentation. A 15 minute Q&A will follow the talk, as will a reception with refreshments.
The talk is free, but donations to Peacemakers of Schoharie County will be solicited.
