Fr. Christopher Brown

"Enthusiastically Episcopalian?"

I have been an Episcopalian for over 30 years. I love the Book of Common Prayer (1549-1979). I love our liturgy and music and the much Anglican vaunted “ethos.”

I have studied the exponents of classic Anglicanism since my early twenties; and I love the whole lot of them, Reformers, Caroline divines, 18th century Evangelicals, 19th century Tractarians, moderns like Temple, Lewis, Ramsey, Kivengiri, Wright, etc.

I also value Eastern Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, the Reformed tradition, Roman Catholicism, Evangelicalism and Pentecostalism – but I could only be an Anglican. Over the years I have been thrilled to be an Episcopalian – and because I am in the Diocese of Albany, I still am.

But I am not enthusiastic about state of the national church. (Does that make me disloyal?) I am actually heartsick. I am no stranger to the national church. I have been canonically resident in three dioceses. I went to General Seminary. I am familiar with 815 2nd Avenue. Seminary friends are now bishops, and candidates for bishop. I don’t agree with their theology, but they are good people. It saddens me to see it all fall apart. And it is. Has anyone seen the numbers?

Wow! What a wise and moving speech, and how very true. How blessed you are that you will have the privilege of hearing Fr Wade speak.
